Bonding

Smiling Man

Bonding is a dental procedure that is often used to repair chipped or cracked teeth, decayed teeth, or discolored teeth. It can be used to change the shape of teeth or to close gaps between teeth, and can also be used as a protective measure to cover exposed root surfaces that have been exposed due to recession.

The procedure involves the dentist applying a tooth-colored resin material to your tooth (we select a shade to closely match the existing color of your teeth), which hardens under a special curing light, which “bonds” the material to your tooth. The resin material is shaped and polished to get a lustrous finish. Bonding is one of the easiest and least expensive of cosmetic dental procedures.

When you visit Pheasant Ridge Dental, we'll discuss with you whether bonding is the right solution for your needs In some cases it is ideal. In other cases, other options may be better. Composite resin used in bonding isn’t nearly as strong as natural tooth, and the bond can be broken from habits such as biting fingernails, chewing on pens or ice, or using your bonded teeth as an opener. In addition, while dental bonding is relatively stain resistant, it doesn’t resist stains as well as porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, or crowns. Bonding may be better for smaller issues, while porcelain veneers, inlays, onlays, and crowns are better options for larger chips and to replace larger fillings or cavities.
